The one on a rainy wednesday

Blog is on a slow down today, being busy with this thing called a wedding the last 2 days so apologies to anyone who gives a sh%t (i.e. no one)

Just in case you are reading this in bed and haven't yet opened the curtains or have been inside in a wifi enabled toilet cubicle all day, then don't bother looking outside. Its shit!

In case you haven't seen how shit it is, here a some pics courtesy of Google images. Cowen needs to do with Putin used to do in Russia. Send in the jets with some chemicals to break up the rain clouds! After all aren't the government jets just sitting on a runway somewhere, trying not to go on fire!

The one with an observation

For years, I’ve been the one recommending what we go to see and what we watch when it comes to movies. After coming home last night, we were debating something to watch and Ger said why not Mama Mia!

I'm not a musical fan in any sense of the word. As a matter of fact I’d prefer to take on a fleet load of Somali pirates, armed with nothing but Daniel O Donnell CD’s, than watch a musical. So, hell froze over last night and I agreed!

I didn't love Mama Mia, but I did enjoy it to a point. There’s no getting away from the fact that the soundtrack is superb!

Now for the observation! Did anyone else find the whole thing a bit fuckin’ nuts, kinda like a sequel to One flew over the cuckoos nest. You have a group of people on an island who break into song at a moments notice (primarily spurred on by a word they hear) and then the whole thing comes to an end with a wet t-shirt competition, where children and a priest are part of the contestants.

Either its a great musical, or one of the most fucked up movies of our time! That said, Meryl Streep had a certain sexiness about her, even more so that Stifler’s Mom!

The one with the mini movie review – Fifty Dead Men Walking

Based on the the book of the same title, Fifty Dead Men Walking is the true story of Martin McGartland.

   fifty_dead_men_walking

The plot is very straight forward. McGartland is a door to door salesman, flogging everything from jeans to knickers, which have all fallen off the back of a truck.  He makes an impression on the IRA during a chase from the army and is subsequently recruited to the IRA, primarily as a driver and by the British police as an infiltrator and spy.

He makes alot of money, gets a new lease on life and starts a family. But as the story goes, he eventually gets discovered and is almost killed after the British sell him; and his confident out as they think it could bring down the whole system.

Fifty Dead Men Walking is fast, its brutal (the torture scenes get special mention) and extremely engaging. For a movie shot very recently, the crew have done an amazing job transforming Belfast back into the city it was over 20 years ago. Jim Sturgess is completely believable as McGartland as is Ben Kingsley as his confident, Fergus. Combined with a great supporting cast, the overall performance is superb!

The movie is extremely well shot and this just envelopes you from the very start. You do feel like you are on the journey with McGartland and I certainly think , Kari Skogland has done justice to not only the book, but to the man who saved 50 lives.

sturgess-and-kingsley

Excluding the introduction, the movie revolves around McGartland so don't be expecting a visual insight into the troubles in the North. That said, the movie does highlight the terror that went on for so long and the conflict that raged but as mentioned, this is about Martin McGartland, and nothing else!

Fifty Dead Men Walking is an incredibly enjoyable and gripping movie. I loved every minute of this and its something you should definitely check out!

The one with the mini movie review – Fast and Furious

Normally when a movie gets a third sequel, it usually means something. That can be a selection of things, but normally it means that there’s still a shit load of money that can be made from the franchise!

fastandfurious_poster

And with a huge opening weekend, Fast and Furious is serious proof in a big, kick ass pudding. Movies like this, provided they are well made are pure entertainment and the only thing you need to think about, is have you put too many malteser’s in with the popcorn?

fastandfurious_image001

Fast and Furious has evolved from the original, which really was about street racing. While there’s plenty of racing action in this, the story is one of possible revenge and the taking down of a major drug criminal, with a few races blended into the mix. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker who made the very first movie so enjoyable, are back.

fastandfurious_image002

Dom (Vin Diesel) is looking for revenge after his girlfriend is killed and O Conor (Walker) is now an FBI agent and is looking to track down the drug dealing / trafficking bad guy. The lads earn a place in a drug running crew by street racing, all the time while trying to get the bad guy and the guy who killed Dom’s better half. Without giving too much away, the final half of the movie revolves around a hijacked hummer full of heroin and an exchange scenario.

(L to R) PAUL WALKER and VIN DIESEL are Brian O'Conner and Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious.

Movies like this will never win awards for acting or writing. And I wondered if a fourth movie in any series could hold its weight. Given the original lead’s returned to the franchise, that was a promising start. Gone are the snazzy cgi scenes, that were so prominent in the original movie. Instead, there are major full on driving stunts which are at times breathtaking. Particular mention must go to the opening sequence with the petrol tanker.

VIN DIESEL is Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious.

If you fancy a no brainer of a movie and fancy some great stunts and action then you can do no wrong by going to see Fast and Furious and of course it’s a petrol head’s wet dream. Granted they have the worlds most annoying sat nav in the movie. Don't expect Oscar worthy performances or anything. The cast do their bit adequately. The franchise has certainly matured and grown up a bit and it does exactly what it says on the tin. No brained, quality escapism, brimming with entertainment.

The one with the mini movie review – Let the right one in

Swedish cinema arrives in Cork with a major bang this Friday (April 10th) with, Let the right one in, which has over 40 awards to its name.

Its a simple story. Bullied boy, who’s a little obsessed with murder (Oskar) meets the new girl in his apartment block, who is a vampire. She needs feeding, and her minder goes off and murders people, by slitting their throat, after hanging them upside down from a tree..of course. He then attempts to fill up big gallon drums with their blood and bring back the liquid happy meal to little miss vampire to feast on

The town thinks there is a serial killer on the loose, until one of the local’s spots Eli (little miss vampire) attacking someone. But some think he’s a little reserved, given that he’s like the mad cat woman from the Simpsons.

let_the_right_one_in

The movie follows the growing relationship between Oskar and Eli and how they become friends and eventually “Go steady”. Throw in the continuing problems with bullying for Oskar and how he deals with the bullies and the constant hunger experienced by Eli, you have an amazing movie.

Let the Right One In

It is incredibly well shot and from the first moment, I was completely and utterly sucked in by the landscapes, the people and an amazing soundtrack which is put to superb use throughout. Let the right one in, is in Swedish, but is subtitled in English. Don't let that put you off whatever you do, as you will miss out on something truly brilliant. There is fantastic performances from all, especially the 2 teenage actors and it feels like your not actually watching a movie, the performances are actually that good! While it may be another vampire movie and quite horrific at times, it brings a human quality to the vampire legend.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

I loved Let the right one in, its something different and refreshing and has a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful ending that will bring a masochistic smile to your face..

While this may not make the Fast and Furious fans take off their pants, Let the right one in; simply put, is not only European cinema at its greatest, but it is cinema at its finest.
